Is There a Model of Intensive Reading?
In the very earliest christian monasteries, a to read scripture as an act of book production is a spiritual act. And in being engrossed in a single text is a really important aspect of engaging with literature. As more books are published and literacy rates increase, i think we have gone to a model of much more a a discursive, broad reading - dipping in and out of particular texts. So many personal collections through history haven't survived because the people inheriting them hasn't got the space for all these other books.
