The Delimitation of the Continental Shelf

After the Truman Proclamation states started claiming further out. There is some concern about that but mostly everybody sees this as an opportunity to make their own claims. In 1958 Geneva Convention on the Law of the Sea we get a rule that says usually you should claim up to about 200 meters from the shore. This can be extended if it turns out that it's possible to exploit deeper parts of the ocean. As long as the exploitability criterion is met you can extend your continental claims much further offshore.
