The Past Is Not a Single Unchanging Thing

History is not a single unchanging thing. The past is always being redefined depending on the questions that contemporary historians ask it. So we went into this series saying, let's avoid the obvious examples. Let's see how far we can find stories that in a sense are red-hot in the discipline at the moment. And once again, I'm returning to the idea that as a novelist, I love the way that history takes you imaginatively into the past.
