Is There a Demos Underlying the Global Economy?
The idea is that there needs to be a self binding arrangement by which the demos is not just not present, but, you know, deliberately hived away from the very actions of the institutions themselves. The model is that of ulysses tying himself to the mass as he passed by the sirens. He wants to prevent himself from being tempted by his own innate human nature. In this way of understanding international economic law, innate human nature is the demos. It's the democracy that tends to always want more for itself and doesn't really think about the larger whole.
