Anslinger and his cohorts aimed to make people believe that cannabis could drive its users literally insane. The idea was that regular pot smoking would make users lose their minds or exacerbate pre-existing mental illnesses. One of the gore files became the most sensationalized story of weed-induced violence in US history.
