The importance of private schools in the production of English cricketers is just way too high. It's really skewed. The development of elite batters, they almost always go to private schools. That's really weird. And I don't think it is as simple as just saying that the pathway structure needs to be more meritocratic. There's a structural thing going on there because if you're a 15-year-old ollie pope, whatever,. You're exposed to such a high level of professionalism really early on and in a way that you can't really create outside the school system or hasn't been in recent times in England.
