I was so sure that the words were not to be taken in a literal sense, that I used them jokingly in their true application. The sole object of courts of law is to resist evil; Christ enjoins us to return good for evil. Courts of law do nothing else. There can be no doubt that Christ meant the human courts of law, which were to condemn him and his disciples. They have always condemned and still continue to condemn millions of men.
