The Story of the Railways in 20th Century Britain
The railways started becoming less economic after the First World War. They were taken over by the state because they were an essential part of the war effort. The railways have to some extent been a political football so whereas Labour Party has always said well they should be state owned and state run, Tory party attended to want to privatize them. We're now at a stage where it looks as if the railways are largely going to be state controlled once again.
