Black Douglas and other bush rangers like him really challenge us to rethink what we think we know about bush ranging. They are a reminder that diversity and racial and ethnic difference is also a part of Australian history. But I would also say that bush ranging should be our entry point and not where we stop when we come to look at these figures. And actually we have this pretty brilliant quote, one of the few things that I have in his own words, his before the court in 1850s Victoria: "Do you have any anything you would like to say as to why you shouldn't be sentenced according to the law?"
