Humphrey Davey became a touchstone of how to self-experiment heroically and boldly. The romantic poets, Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Robert Suddy all tried to outdo each other in describing this experience. So these kind of huge towering figures like Sigmund Freud and William James experimented with drugs were very influenced by their own experiences. You know, they were doing this because they were doing science in a world where everybody was doing this.
