Roanoke and the Lost Colonists refers to a settlement of 118 men, women and children that was established in what is today North Carolina in 1587. When leaders of the settlement returned in 1519 to resupply the colonists, they had entirely disappeared. Since then, historians have been trying to figure out what might have happened to these people or whether they assimilated with local Native American populations.
