The story of the Cuban crisis doesn't start with Kennedy, Christove and Castro. We first need to explore the history of colonial links between Cuba and the US. Even at points during the 19th century, there were quite serious inquiries from the US to Spain about buying Cuba off the Spanish or somehow acquiring control over it. So there's a very, very strong colonial history here to understand,. That's very big, certainly in the Cuban mindset, and how that's understood. And people like Cespada, the leader of the original Cuban independence revolt, really become kind of national heroes in Cuba.
