The Buffered Self

I was reflecting on this this morning when I was walking my dog there's a concept that I think I've mentioned before in one of these conversations it's from Charles Taylor's philosophical tome a secular age. One of those conditions is what he calls the buffered self and we live at a point where our immunological tendency our tendency to be very watchful and careful of all things that come in whether we're talking biologically or psychologically you see ever proliferating dietary restrictions. You can see this culturally both in xenophobic racist right-wing nationalist groups that are constantly obsessing about cultural impurities but also on the left with the kind of endless paranoia about whether any given idea or an utterance
