Cornwall was at the forefront of maritime British history. Falmouth developed as the preeminent international port for Britain. Once you could just plow straight on up the English Channel to Bormorth and Southampton, then Cornwall kind of fell by the wayside. But in the age of sail, Falmouth was the equivalent to Heathrow Airport and Dover.
