The Slavery of Spartacus and Cratus
The Romans were very peculiar about slave revolts. Spartacus, who hadn't really done much fighting since the one battle that he won for Sulla, hired his own army and paid for his own army. He was famous for his boast that you weren't really rich unless you could pay for an army out of your own income. But Cratus became notorious in later years for how he dealt with the survivors of the Spartacus rebellion; he crucified them on the Appian way between Rome and Capua.
