The old notation is a tool of thought, creates the output that programmers can easily do with it. It's not so much about making something difficult to do, but quite often you can shape people's behavior by what's easy to do. And if you make something easy to do, they're more likely to do it. So I think the things that should be easy to do are not just like conveniences or whatever, but they should be things that are fundamentally like good ways to think about problems.
