Swimming Pools in the 1800s
The YMCA introduced their first swimming pool in Brooklyn in 1885. Philadelphia went on to build nine pools. Over a summer, 144,000 people would swim in each pool. But because the municipal pools were intended to be public baths, the facilities did not contain showers as the pool itself was an instrument of cleaning.
