I was a children's bookseller for like a thousand years before I became a kid's book author. And so I've done those school book fairs. Like that used to be a huge part of my job. Selling to the school market is tough. It's where the rubber meets the road in a lot of ways. The education wing of the company, which is separate from their own publishing part, has to sell into school districts where these books are being banned. They thought that they could thread the needle here. You can't support marginalized authors and diverse voices at the same time as trying to appease the people who would see us silenced. In some cases, frankly, dead.
