The british national dish is a mixture of jewish, emigre and french food. Fish ind chips were essentially came out of jewish culture in London's east end. And they took off very quickly because fried fish was cheap and really tasty. So it appears that around the 18 sixties to have been the first time chip shop fit in london. It wasn't recognized as such at the second world war but by then people had grown used to it.
