Once Russell finally has an army that he can rely on he determines to cut his way through to relieve Exeter and that's exactly what he does. A whole series of really bitter battles that have fought out in the countryside between Huntington and Exeter as royal forces sort of bludgeon their way to the city very large numbers of rebels are killed in this series of encounters many of them killed on the field of battle. There is a final terrible conflict which is fought out around Samford Courtney and William Underhill who first started all of the protest leads the sapphire rebels but they're completely overwhelmed there.
