In the early days, there were a lot of people like Turing who really had this model of the brain as computer like. And now we've seen that that view of the brain has more or less been abandoned by most cognitive scientists in a couple of different ways. The best models of memory and reasoning and perception and problem solving all have this character - they take huge amounts of information and figure out how to constrain their solution.
