In the past 30 years, our incarceration rate has increased 600%. The United States is the country with the largest percentage of incarcerated people in the world. There is financial motivation for incarcerating people because of the prison industrial complex which is the relationship between private business and the jail or prison system. It's a really telling example of how identity and positions of privilege in society are going to cause you to have different impacts relative to sharing a similar action.
