The idea was that all large institutions were just jokes, figments of the imagination that didn't really exist. What was real was individuals taking individual actions, and those individual actions would somehow coalesce into a collective higher purpose without organization. That idea appealed to these bright young men who had this gentle hippie idea of freedom also fitting with the rugged individualist heroic idea of freedom they'd read about in science fiction magazines.
