Is There a Political Problem With Automating Automation?
The problem of necessary labor is not just a question of how many things can machines do versus human beings, but where are they going to come from? It requires a collective political determination of need and a collective institutional arrangement that guarantees that labor will go to the places where labor needs to be done. And if all you're proposing to people is we'll have a UBI and we'll critique the work ethic, and we'll just leave it up to individual choices,. There's no reason to think that that political problem has even been recognized, let alone given some convincing institutional solution.
