The Levitical Cities of Refuge

Two and a half of the tribes didn't want to cross over the Jordan and settle in the Holy Land. Instead, they wanted to remain where there was plenty of grazing land for their cattle. So these cities were spread out throughout the land so that if someone needed to flee to them, he wouldn't have to travel like 300 miles in order to get there.
