The First Prize Was Given Posthumously to a Black Man on a Coast Guard Cutter
The first prize was given posthumously to a man on board one of those Coast Guard cutters, the Comanche. Charles W. David pulled up white men in 36 degrees temperature water. He died of exposure of pneumonia because he did that. After saving all those lives. So that was the first prize. And then the second one was to an American girl from California who went to South Africa and was stoned to death. She went there to fight apartheid. Ironically, it was bringing a black friend back to their home in the Soweto neighborhoods. It was Archbishop Desmond Tutu presented the award.
