In the late 40s and early 50s, mutual funds were closet indexers. When you wanted to run a fund, they said, well, because of this M&A, we don't want you running an active fund. We came into the go-go era. So all these fancy growth funds, high-powered buying stocks that had no investment, no intrinsic investment at all.
