John and louise were married, but he was abusive. He even assaulted her while she was pregnant. When miss louise contacts him periodically to see if he's seen them or heard anything, he says they're probably off with a man somewhere. The family canvasses their old neighborhood. They jump every time the phone or the door bell rings. Chante starts checking the newspaper, looking for clues. But the whole first year passes with little to now movement in the case.
