Five million soldiers were deployed on the western front alone at some period of time. At the beginning of the war, millions had volunteered and even when conscription was introduced, there was a general belief that these were citizen soldiers. And it was no good any longer to assume that this death on a foreign battle field was part of the necessary er endr for soldier families.
