The Origins of Castles in England

Starting in 1066, there is a common or garden type of castle that the Normans introduced. The Mott being a great artificial mound of earth on which sits typically at first a wooden tower. A lower shallower enclosure called the Bailey was defended with ditches and wooden walls. But from the start, 99% of castles are just made of earth and timber.
