Hong Taiji surrounded the new fortifications at Da Ling Ha City, a strategic outpost just north of the Ming stronghold at Jin Zhou. Relief columns sent in October were decimated by the Manchu forces. A number of Ming military figures, including Zhang Tuan Ren, defected to the Manchu side at this time. These events also affected the political stability of Shandong Province. Hong Taiji then laid siege to Dengzhou, which fell to him on February 22nd, 1632.
