The History of the Academy in Ancient Greece
The academy was founded in 383, just shortly after Plato returned from his first visit to southern Italy and Sicily. The name Academy is simply derived from the fact that the school was founded in a suburb of Athens that was named after a local hero called Akademos or Hekadimos. It rather looks as though it was right from the start dedicated more to educational pursuits than just gymnastic pursuits.
