Common Land - What It Means to Communities

From the Anglo-Saxon period onwards, we can see commons being used as a place for communal gatherings. We have early references to cricket being held on common land in the 16th century. And perhaps the most important, certainly the most widespread sport on common land, probably from the middle ages is horse racing. So you have race courses around towns and there are numerous race courses across Cumbria - which was not exactly an urban county in the 17th century.
