The hero was right next to the dragon's unprotected underbelly. He grabbed the dragon's teeth, and pushed, keeping the mouth from crushing him. Even though he was aged and bloody, even though he had no eyebrows because of the fire, Beowulf looked every bit the warrior that killed Grindel.
