Parents today aspire to be best friends with their children over the life course. Part of what's problematic these days is that parents have invested, they've spent more time with their children. Even career mothers are spending more hours with their children than stay at home mothers did in the supposedly healthy on days of the 1960s. So parental expectations can feel like a narrow bottleneck towards a successful adulthood.
