Just a simple scent can conjure up such a vivid memory for many people. The region of the brain that processes smells, called the olfactory cortex, is located anatomically in the brain very, very close to the hippocampus. There may be just a direct line of communication between those two structures. But there's really no sort of firm agreement on this.
