The system of enslavement practised by people in this country didn't become racialized until the middle part of the seventeenth century. People smuggling involved europeans, africans and, in some cases, native americans and people of asian descent. And even then, people of african descent who were transported to the US had a status similar to their white counterparts. This is an illustration that the more positive notions probably had the upper hand at least until the end of the seventteenth century.
