The Unpredictability of Violence
Before French arrival, indigenous populations did not make war upon each other in the ways that they subsequently learned how to do. They lacked obviously guns and metal arms. And so there's an image from Champlain, first kind of confront military confrontation with Mohawk warriors outside of what is now Lake Champlain New York. None of that is commensurate with what becomes the dominant form of military conflict throughout this region in the late 1600s,. mid to late 1600s and throughout the century thereafter.
