The House Divided During the Civil War
In 1858, Lincoln talked about a house divided two years before he was elected in course of the Civil War. The real house divided began during John Adams presidency. When Adams was president with federalist controlling both houses of Congress barely, they passed the Sedition Act which made it a crime punishable by incarceration for anyone to publicly criticize Adams or any federalist policies. So we have much in our nation's past where there's been major divides.
