In the 19 nineties, there were works that showed you can verify the integrity of a huge computation very efficiently liken something that would be a smart phone. And so lior goldberg and shaha papini at starkware decided they couldn't internally sort of continue with out some sort of domain specific language. They started working on cairo to abstract away a lot of these ideas otherwise it's just too complex. Two years later, two years late, there are at this point, hundreds, probably beyond a thousand, people out there developing code in cairo. No one thought no one ever thought would be done on the block chain, right?
