The Harlem Hell Fighters - A History of the Civil War
The regiment themselves, at the time, called themselves the harlem rattlers. They had so many nicknames it's hard to know which have been given subsequently and which were at the time,. The hell fighters become something, again, picked up in the news, much like devil dogs for the marines. But how were they treated? And were they treated differently to veterans who were white? One thing they keep in mind with the 360 ninth is that their experience does not necessarily reflect the experience of all african american veterans returning home after the war.
