Why Would a Team Commit $40 Million to Derek Carr?

"I'm not positive that Derek Carr is going to be great," says Mike Downey. "Why the hell would I want to guarantee 40.4 million sight unseen for Derek Carr?" If a team was willing to take on that contract and give the Raiders draft pick compensation, mid round or higher, then if Derek Carr was just a free agent, he could probably do a better deal. This isn't one of those situations where a player has a contract that is so favorable to the team that another team trades for it.
