The King's Excommunication and the Death of the Monks
In 15 34, an act of succession stated the lawfulness of henry's marriage to ambelin and that their children would be true heirs to the throne. But as his excommunication came into force, queen anne gave birth to a daughter, elizabeth. All english male subjects were required to swear an oath agreeing this - but three carthusian monks who refused to do so were sent to the tower. It was treason to call the king a heretic, a tyrant, an infidel or a schismatic. And as a result, the three monks were hanged, drawn and quartered in june 15 35. The attachment to rome had been well and truly broken.
