The term "social determinants of health" has been used to deflect attention from the fact that the United States provides so little in terms of social support for anybody, says Julian Zelizer. The term is often used in these incredibly instrumentalized and like, uh, very duplicitous ways by people who want to control others' lives or get them into their own financial trouble," writes Zelizer. 'It's just a curse to me that those are the kind of, it always has been people using it as a way of like deflecting attention,' he adds.
