Mary of Gies was born in a Lithgow palace, but moved to Sterling Castle. She had an extraordinarily luxurious and fetid childhood at the French court. When she became old enough, when she was 12 and 13, she was given her own place at court. Her husband, the Dauphain of France, became the king of France. And he'd always been a very sickly boy. They're not even very sure when Mary and he married if it was ever consummated or even possible for them to have a real marriage. He died very young, very soon after they were married.
