Nord Stream and Russia as a Source of Energy
Nord Stream is a very important policy initiative that the US has always opposed. The expectation was that this would serve European natural gas needs for possibly 50 years. Russia of course loved this because they had a market to sell into. But when these pipelines opened, I think what they signified was to people in Europe, a source of energy but also a strengthening of Russia as a state that could use energy as a form of leverage.
