The Origins of the Periscope
Some regiments organized things to be sent out, but mostly its families. It was tradition that you'd share everything with your mates. They tend not to be invented by somebody in a trench gun. They tend to be more, somebody says, we need this. And they sort of work it out back home. Paul Orton on Facebook is asked, what was the biggest cause of injury to soldiers in terms of armaments? It's not machine guns. It's not weapons like grenades or mortars - just people who were injured and couldn't get up again.
