Face for Pacasso - Is Gillies a Product of Face Reconstruction?
Gillies had band mirrors. As you say, it was done under the guise that was to protect these men. When you're going through facial reconstruction, your face can sometimes look worse before it looks better. It could be really lonely and isolating. A lot of these men were forced to sit on brightly painted blue benches when they left the hospital grounds so that the public knew not to look at them. They were constantly getting feedback that they had that there was something wrong with their faces. So it's all part of a bigger conversation about society ases at this time towards disfigured soldiers or disfigured faces.
