The Meat Paradox and Its Roots in Psychology

In the UK, one in three people claim to be eating less meat. But consumption data shows that we're actually eating just as much as ten years ago. There's a sense of ethical distress that can arise when we perceive that we've contributed towards the harm of an animal and which is intrinsic to animal farming. We kill animals to consume them. And this, as psychologists believe, creates a state cognitive distance, of emotional tension. It's revealed some really surprising things about the nature of human perception and the way that society treats animals and thinks about animals.
