In early modern times, midwives were much more keen to insert their hands into chacking where things were. This meant that they became very skilled with their hands at manipulating babies. In well over 90 % of cases when things went wrong, thate was often an unhappy outcome. Still, to come on the history extra podcast, and that people were very ignorant.
